Chess Illinois K-8 State Championship

March 19, 2019

Illinois K-8 State Championship Wrap-up: Championship Month (aka March) kicked off on March 9th-10th when we participated in the Illinois K-8 State Championship at the Bone Center on Illinois State University's campus in Normal, IL. This was our most important tournament of the school year and our efforts were a rousing success! Thirteen Skinner North children went downstate, 44% more than we have ever brought south to this event before.

We competed in all four sections and won three team trophies and six individual trophies! In the K-1 section, everybody was a winner! We earned the 5th place team trophy finishing ahead of all other Chicago area schools in spite of only having three children participating (a full team is 4 children). Out of 62 children playing in this section, the Skinner North children all finished in the top third of the field. Leo H earned the 5th place trophy with 5 out of a possible 7 points. Toby B and Luca C each finished with 4 points and earned the 18th and 20th place trophies respectively. Great job! Our Grades 2-3 section featured Charlie S and Grant L. With only two players in the section, a trophy was not to be had. However, both Charlie and Grant participated in their second State Championship, and both boys won 3 games and in both cases, that was more wins than they had earned last year. Congratulations to both Charlie and Grant on their growth and improvement! Our Grades 4-5 section was comprised of Andy C, Siddharth M, Shaina B and Julian M. They earned the 7th place team trophy and boy was it close! Everyone's efforts mattered; without all four players, we could not have won as a team. Out of 126 children in this section, Andy and Siddharth led the way for our team. Both boys earned 5 points and earned 11th and 22nd place individual trophies respectively. Please also join me in recognizing that Sidd has now raised his rating over 1000. For the first time ever, Skinner North now has 6 children rated over 1000. Congratulations! Our Grades 6-8 section team of Jack H, Simon B, Sinan H and Mark E earned the 10th place team trophy. Again, it couldn't have been closer! Out of 122 children in this section, Jack led the way for our team; he earned 5.5 points and the 7th place individual trophy. Please also join me in congratulating Sinan on his first rated tournament and Mark on his first complete tournament. We truly worked together and succeeded as a team.
