Let's celebrate the 8 Students and teacher sponsors who participated in the Mathcounts regional competition on 2/23: Sean R. (8th grade), Emily W. (8th grade), Jasmine Z. (6th grade), and Oliver G. (6th grade) participated as a Skinner North team. Derek P., Umar S., Nicole Y., and Grant G. (all 6th graders) participated as individuals.
The Skinner North team took first place in their division and will be moving on to the state competition to be held on 3/23. Individually, Umar S also qualified to participate at the state competition. Sean and Emily won individual awards in Skinner North’s division with Sean placing first and Emily second.
Congratulations to the student participants for representing our school so well. Additional congratulations and thanks to Mr Marsden and Ms Ridgway for their hard work coaching.
Mount Carmel HS was a wonderful host to our boys and girls. With 44 Skinner North students present, this was also our second biggest tournament entry. We were happy to welcome Zara S to her first chess tournament. Hopefully, there will be many more in her future. It was also exciting to see such strong participation in the K-2 and 3-4 sections (15 and 10 children respectively). With that kind of participation, the team is sure to keep growing and improving. That's not to suggest that we didn't have a lot of success right now. Our team earned first place trophies in the K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and Intermediate sections. You're going to need another trophy case, Dr. Magnuson!
There were many individual successes too, Our K-2 team featured Luca C winning every game and earning the first place trophy! Hannah G, Charlie S and Toby B were all close behind with 4 of 5 possible points. Due to tiebreak rules, of the three of them, only Hannah G won a trophy. Owen W, Hannah K, Ananya P, Luke C, Amelie P, Emily W and Amy C all earned plus scores showing just how strong our K-2 team really is. Congratulations on a strong team effort! Our Grades 3-4 team had similar individual results. Siddharth M earned a 5.0 and the first place trophy! Anjali M, Aryaa G and Max Z all scored 4.0. They were joined by Ethan J, Eamonn K, Mitra D and Joanna K who all earned plus scores too. This group was strong and deep too. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I want to note that our Grades 5-6 team was led by Quentin D with a 5.0 score that also earned him the first place trophy. Similarly, Julian M, Nikolas L and Zachary A all earned 4.0 scores but, due to tiebreak rules, only Julian won a trophy. Sinan H also contributed a plus score to our team's effort. Congratulations are also well earned by our Intermediate team. Richard W, Niccolo L and Charlie A all earned 4.0 scores and trophies too. Andrew X and Simon B also earned plus scores. Please also congratulate Andy C on his 3.0 out of 4.0 in the Advanced section and the 2nd place trophy he won.
