QED Math Symposium

A number of our 8th graders attended QED, a math symposium where middle and high school students share mathematical projects. Four students received the Distinguished Mathematics Research Award: Nathan, Shreyas, Sean, and Jaiden. Two students received Highly Distinguished Mathematics Research Award: Ozzie and Ray. Ozzie and Ray will automatically advance to the City Science Fair with their projects.

QED is sponsored by Math Circles of Chicago, a free program for math enrichment open to all Chicago kids. Visit Math Circles of Chicago to learn more about their programs and events.

Chess: The Junior Prep Bowl Wrap-Up
What a fun time we had! We had 19 Skinner North children and their families at CPS chess's inaugural Junior Prep Bowl. In the K-4 section, Keaney R, Everett K, Oliver C and Oliver L teamed up one player short to represent us. This scrappy group competed hard and earned the 3rd place team trophy. Keaney led the way from Board 1 winning 3 of his 4 games. Our K-6 team went unbeaten and won the 1st place trophy. Paul S (Board 3) and Rhett S (Board 4) both won all their games. While Matthew C contributed more points from Board 1, Paul and Rhett were integral to the team winning anyway the one time Matthew was stopped. We had two K-8 teams and wouldn't you know it - they squared off in round 4. Our multigrade team walked away with four wins and the 1st place trophy. Andy C (Board 2) and Evan C (Board 3) led the way by both winning all their games. Our 8th graders earned the 3rd place trophy better together during their shared farewell tour. They were led by Nathan L, who won all his games on Board 1. It was a pleasure to see Nathan, Harry D, Finn B, Jaiden L and Shreyas V play together, have fun together and succeed together.
