The Skinner North Diversity Committee strives to create an inclusive student, staff and parent community by not only recognizing our many differences, but celebrating them. We must visibly and actively create an environment where each member of our community feels welcome.
The Skinner North Diversity Committee is committed to celebrating multiculturalism and diversity in the school environment – through our annual International Fest, bulletin boards and assemblies. We continue to look for more opportunities to highlight, celebrate and bring to life the best of who we are as individuals and as a community.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Research has shown that the majority of students who are harassed are targeted based upon race, gender, actual or perceived sexual orientation, national origin, religion or ability. Throughout the month of October and into November, the Skinner North Diversity Committee, along with the Skinner North faculty and administration team, will celebrate the many facets of our diverse community including immigrants, LGBTQ, and various religious, racial and ethnic groups. Starting the week of October 16, we will display a banner at the school entrance celebrating that ALL ARE WELCOME HERE at Skinner North. Our celebration will culminate in our annual International Fest scheduled for Friday, November 17th in the early evening (more details forthcoming shortly).
Celebrating diversity can be fun. It can also be challenging as we face topics that may be unfamiliar and uncomfortable at first. We hope that, as a school community, we can model working through that discomfort and learning through open discussions. We hope that we can use resources to educate ourselves as we educate our children to become members of a global community.
The Diversity Committee is open to suggestions on how to foster a more actively inclusive and welcoming community. Please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org with your questions and comments. For more resources on discussing these topics, we will be making a list available to the school community on our diversity website that is located on the school website soon. We look forward to a successful year of celebrating ALL ARE WELCOME HERE.
